The Other SWAT Team

The other SWAT team showed up to help with data entry this Saturday. The Sarpy Couty SWAT Team used the second and third floors of the Livestock Exchange Building to practice their active shooter exercises. They worked from 9am to 3pm. Hector, myself and a Marine Officer from Offut played the bad guys in the scenario. The team was prfessional and very scary once they were all decked out in their gear. I would definitely feel comfortable if they came to rescue me. Some of them were kind enough to take a picture with our data preload crew.

Three weeks since my last post

It has been three weeks since my last post and there is a ton of stuff going on.

Upcoming Events

Next Saturday April 25th: OneWorld is working to keep our community beautiful through an event we are sponsoring at McKinley Park 2808 Harrison St.. The event, called Keepin' Our Space Green, will be held from 10am to 2pm at the park that Saturday. We need a lot of helpers for this event so contact Holly Goodrich at 112 if you can help even just for part of the event.

Cinco de Mayo: OneWorld again is a sponsor of the Cinco de Mayo festivities that are being help ironically on the 2nd and third of May this year. We are the title sponsor of the Fun Run, there is a parade at 10am that we will be walking in with the Care Mobile, and we will have a booth at the fair Saturday and Sunday. Please see Holly to volunteer or for more details. The parade and Fun Run are great opportunitites to get your entire family involved.

EHR Go Live is still scheduled for May 19th!!!!
Thanks to the hard work of a team too large to name right now the EHR go live is still on for May 19th. This is an exciting leap forward for OneWorld and our patients. Currently Dr. Dethlefs and his team of template artists are putting the finishing touches on the custom templates thay have designed to ensure our success. Creighton Medical Labs is working dilligently to ready our lab interface that will allow us to send lab orders and receive the results back electronically. No word yet on the interface that will allow us to send the samples electronically. We are working with the State Immunization Registry people to get a download of all the immunizations of our patients so that we can have this pre-loaded into the EHR for go live. Last but certainly not least, thank you to the group of devoted staff who have been working to pre-load the data from the paper medical charts into NextGen.

I found out this week that we will be the first primary care practice in Omaha to go live with the NextGen EHR. This includes both FQHC's and private doctors offices.

Annual WIC Yard Sale

Wic is having their Annual Yard Sale on May 30th. Below is detail sent to me by Dawn Ballosingh our WIC Manager. I am too lazy to retype it in my own words. This is an important event and is also unique as the proceeds for the event go towards purchasing breastfeeding supplies for the moms who come to the WIC clinic. It is also unique in that it is an event planned and staffed by the WIC staff. They could use some help both in working the event and for donations of merchandise.

Last Year WIC held its first yard sale to raise money for breastfeeding supplies for clients that did not other wise qualify to receive help for those things.
This year we would like to open up donations and request volunteers to help us man the tables on May 30th. We will be collecting donations for the sale as of 05/27/09 and would be doing the sorting and preparing for the sale on 05/29/09.
All clothing and linen items must be clean and without damage or stains. It would be helpful if they sorted them into Men's women's, boys and girls bags.
All household items must be clean and in working order ( ex. toaster oven, vacuum, iron, lamp etc). No broken dishware.
All children toys must be disinfected, Items with small pieces, must be put in a ziploc bag and labeled.
The event will be held at the WIC office a the corner of 25th & L St and the sale will be gin from 8:00-12:00, and we sure would appreciate volunteers in 3 hour shifts, (7;30-10:30) a.m. to help with sorting and set up and p.m. (10:30-1:30) to help with breakdown and transportation to the Mission
Anything not sold will be donated to the Mission for all Nations at 21st & Q that services our community.

Also I know you need a duck update. The ducks continue to be spotted in our pond periodically but we believe they are renting a place by a nearby creek for the summer. I will keep you posted.

Celine Dion

Nobody loves Celine Dion more than I do so you can imagine my excitement when I opened my email Friday and saw these pictures. Stephanie Thorson was one of many OneWorld staff members who attended but she gets points for being the only one who chose to contribute to the blog. For those of you who were not lucky enough to attend, there's always next time.
Thanks Stephanie!

March is National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month. In honor of this month I want to share a little bit about the dieticians that work for OneWorld in our WIC office. The article below was sent to me by Dawn Ballosingh, OneWorld WIC Manager. We appreciate all the work that Dawn and her team of dieticians do for our community. There will be a test later so read carefully.

For National Nutrition Month get to know your Registered Dietitians (RD)
Registered dietitians (RDs) are food and nutrition experts who have met the following criteria to earn the RD credential:
o Completed a minimum of a bachelor's degree at a U.S. regionally accredited university or college and course work approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
o Completed a CADE-accredited supervised practice program at a healthcare facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation, or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies.
o Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
o Completes continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.
Some RDs hold additional certifications in specialized areas of practice, such as pediatric or renal nutrition, nutrition support, and diabetes education. These certifications are awarded through CDR, the credentialing agency for ADA, and/or other medical and nutrition organizations and are recognized within the profession, but are not required. For Example:
Lisa Steinbach has a masters Degree in Food & Nutrition Science
Grace Sourile is certified in Pediatric and Adolescent Obesity Weight Management
Stephanie Thorson has her master’s degree in Human Resources & Family Sciences
Dawn Ballosingh has a master’s degree in Public Health Administration.
In addition to RD credentialing, many states have regulatory laws for dietitians and nutrition practitioners. Frequently these state requirements are met through the same education and training required to become an RD. In Nebraska the RD is a “Licensed Medical Nutrition Therapist” or LMNT. OWCHC boasts 3 LMNT’s on staff.
Dietitians’ college course work consists of a variety of subjects, ranging from food and nutrition sciences, foodservice systems management, business, economics, computer science, culinary arts, sociology, and communication to science courses such as biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, anatomy, and chemistry.
Registered dietitians work in a wide variety of employment settings, including health care, business and industry, public health, education, research, and private practice.
OneWorld currently has on staff 5 RD’s and 1 Nutritionist. In addition to their professional educational and counseling services through the WIC program, over the last year, OWCHC RD’s have been instrumental in working with clinic staff for teaching Cholesterol classes, helping to plan the wellness program, community outreach and health promotions through the Radio Lobo’s “Femenina Energia” weight loss challenge and the Channel 22 La Voz health series discussion and call-in show on Tuesday nights at 7:00 and health fairs. THE OWCHC RD’s continues to add value to the quality of care and services that OneWorld provides.
So get to know your dietitians and thank them for their contributions.

New Addition to the Extended OneWorld Family

I received notice yesterday that the OneWorld family has grown by one more. Ben and Loren Fouts welcomed a new baby into the world on December 20th. For those of you who are new, Ben was our data manager for a long time and Loren was a midwife here at OneWorld. Ben still works very closely with Michelle Linbo to help meet our data reporting needs. Their daughter was born on December 20th and her name is Rowan Lane Fouts. Congratulations to Loren and Ben! As babies go, I have to admit, Rowan is pretty cute.
